Classic Camp Programs

For the camper who wants to try it all, Classic Resident Camp (our most popular option!) offers the widest array of activities and experiences – a little bit of everything!  After raising the flag and eating a hearty breakfast, every morning begins with WOW time – Words of Wisdom to start your day off in the right direction.  Each action-packed day is filled with rock climbing, fire building, archery, canoeing, kayaking, swimming at the waterfront, capture the pig, orienteering arts & crafts, and GaGa – just to name a few.  All-camp games, campfires, a weekly closing ceremony, night hikes, and more await campers in the evenings.  All of our activities are counselor-led, and designed to give every child the opportunity to be successful and learn new skills.

Specialty Camp Programs

Summer CampSherman Lake YMCA offers a wide range of specialty summer camps for all interests and ages! Our Climbing and Water Adventures Camps pair traditional camp with fun activities like rock climbing and high ropes courses at Thrills & Chills (ages 12-16) or Ultimate Thrills & Chills (ages 13-16), sailing and tubing at Wet & Wild Water Sports (ages 12-16), or the best on land and water at Scale & Sail (ages 13-16).

Our Fine Arts and Performing Arts camps offer the opportunity to sculpt, do mosaic tiling and candle making, painting, collages and more at Art Prize Sherman Lake YMCA  (ages 12-15), play piano at Gilmore Piano Camp (ages 8-16),  and take to the stage with Lights, Camera, Action! Theatre Camp (ages 12-16), or create a culinary masterpiece at our new and improved Culinary Academy camp.

Our Special Interest camps engage campers who love strategy games and role playing: LARP Quest (ages 12-16), and adventure, exploring and puzzle solving: Amazing Race (ages 12-15).  For our horse lovers, we have a wide variety of horse camps for every age and skill level.   First Time Wranglers (ages 8-14) is perfect for beginning riders.  Rodeo Wranglers (ages 10-15) covers obstacle riding, barrel riding, roping and a rodeo at the end of the week to showcase what you’ve learned.  Wild Wild West (ages 13-16) is a true rustic experience – trail rides, cowboying skills, and a showdown hoedown at the end of the week.  Wranglers in Training (ages 16-18) is offered through our High School Development Program for those who would like to be a Wrangler counselor.

Safety

Summer Camp

Safety is our #1 priority. Camp staff is carefully screened during a character-based hiring process and are selected for their skills and concern for the well-being of children. Professional program staff work directly with counselors to provide guidance and support. All staff are certified in first aid and CPR and have been screened through the highest standards of child safety practices, including background checks. The Sherman Lake YMCA is accredited by the American Camp Association.

Philosophy

At Sherman Lake YMCA Camps, campers experience the power of living through HCRR (Hick-er). The Y’s four core values – Honesty, Caring, Respect, Responsibility – are emphasized in each camp program. Through discovery of the great outdoors, skill development and guidance in the importance of building healthy relationships, campers leave with a renewed sense of achievement, belonging, confidence and courage to try new things. The Sherman Lake YMCA Outdoor Center is an inclusive
organization that welcomes all persons regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, religion or disability.

Camp Fees

It is camp policy to provide services to all people regardless of the ability to pay established fees. This policy is accomplished by setting fees at rates as affordable as possible and by providing financial assistance to those for whom the camp fees are not affordable. Those in need of financial assistance may be awarded partial scholarship funds. Scholarships are offered for one week of camp/child/summer. Visit our Making Camp Affordable page for more information and other discounts and payment plans, or call (269) 731-3000.
